DR TOM LLOYD
Tom is a biodiversity and conservation scientist specialising in the use of geospatial data to inform conservation policy and solutions. He holds a Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation (Macquarie University, 2014), a Master of Conservation Science (University of Queensland, 2018), and a PhD in Conservation Science (University of Queensland, 2025). His research spans applied biogeography, impact mitigation and ecological compensation, protected and conserved area effectiveness and resourcing, and spatial conservation planning. His PhD examined the risks and opportunities that industrial mining poses for biodiversity and conservation, regionally and globally.
Tom's past experience includes working in the Peruvian Amazon as a macaw researcher, New South Wales Parliament as a secretary and research assistant, The Centre for Conservation Geography as a geospatial analyst, and The Biodiversity Consultancy as a Research and Development Consultant. His main role in the Global Ecology Lab is to explore and develop downstream applications of the Global Ecosystems Atlas—the first global dataset on the extent of ecosystems mapped to the IUCN's Global Ecosystem Typology—feeding the dependencies of such applications back into the Atlas' development to maximise its conservation utility.
