DR ROBERT CANTO

Robert Canto is a geospatial scientist, with extensive research experience spanning oceanography, habitat monitoring, continental- to regional-scale spatial assessments, and multispectral remote sensing image-based mapping. His work centers on the application of spatial data, remote sensing imagery, and geographic information systems (GIS) to develop spatially explicit knowledge and solutions for environmental research and management.

He is currently contributing to the GEO Global Ecosystems Atlas, ,which is building the world's first globally consistent ecosystem map using the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (GET) as a framework.  Within the project, Robert's work focuses on:

• Global ecosystem assessment and training data development – conducting ecosystem type assessments using satellite imagery, spatial datasets, scientific literature, and other sources of ecological information to develop high-quality training data for global ecosystem mapping.

• Ecosystem type data discovery, collation, and evaluation – identifying, compiling, and assessing existing ecosystem datasets from around the world, contributing to a comprehensive global database that underpins the development of the Global Ecosystems Atlas.
