NAEMA GROS-DUBOIS
Naema studied a Bachelor of Chemical and Biological Engineering (Hons) at the University of Queensland graduating in 2018, after which she worked as a process engineer in an oil refinery in Brisbane until 2022. In her time as a process engineer, she developed core technical and problem solving skills working in energy optimisation, project development, process safety as well as a 1-year stint as the optimisation engineer for the Polymerisation, Solvents and Alkylation units. What she enjoyed the most was getting hands-on field experience, entering confined spaces and physically seeing and understanding how each component worked and connected together to run a functioning unit.
In 2022, driven by a passion for nature conservation, Naema moved to Townsville to undertake a Master of Science majoring in Marine Biology at James Cook University. Since graduating, she's strived to combine her diverse technical background and passion for nature in the remote sensing space. Naema joined the Global Ecology Lab at JCU in early 2024 as a Research Assistant, where she worked on the GEO Global Ecosystems Atlas Initiative Proof-of-Concept. She worked on searching, cataloguing and evaluating existing spatial data for inclusion in a single harmonised, open-source resource on the extent of the world's ecosystems mapped to the IUCN’s Global Ecosystem Typology.
Since early 2025, Naema has served as Project Coordinator, focusing on the continued expansion of the Global Ecosystems Atlas throughout Phase 1 of the initiative while supporting the day-to-day operations and sustainability of the Global Ecology Lab. In her free time, she enjoys going birding, camping, diving and planting as many native trees and shrubs in her garden as she can.
