DR ALYS RHIANNON YOUNG

Dr Alys Young is a quantitative ecologist dedicated to conserving global biodiversity. Her research leverages large spatial datasets and quantitative models to understand, map, and protect ecosystems and species at broad scales. Alys earned her PhD from Deakin University in 2026, where her research examined innovative methods to integrate diverse datasets and knowledge systems to better understand the state and trends of ecosystems and species in Australia on Indigenous-managed lands. She also holds a Master of Science (2019) and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Zoology (2017) from The University of Melbourne.

A core pillar of her approach to research is bridging data-driven analysis with community-aligned conservation. She is particularly passionate about collaborating with Indigenous peoples to support local goals, knowledge systems, and aspirations.

Currently working with the Global Ecology Lab at James Cook University, Alys develops robust and reproducible modelling pipelines to map ecosystem distributions for the Global Ecosystems Atlas.
